Though Avocado can be of many benefits to human when consume. It has health benefit nutrients like protein, potassium, folate, fiber, magnesium, vitamins C, E and K etc, but the story is different in animals because it is toxic to them.
The consumption of Avocado can lead to death of some animals. Avocado leaves, skin, bark and pit are attested to be harmful to these ten animals: Dogs, Rats, Cats, Goats, Birds, Fish, Cattles, Guinea Pigs, Rabbits and Horses. According to ASPCA, Avocado fruit is poisonous to some birds and as well toxic to horses.
The toxic fatty acid derivative, persin, present in Avocado leaves can cause colic in horses when consume in sufficient quantity which can eventually lead to death without proper veterinary treatment as soon as possible. Birds also seem to be particularly sensitive to this toxic compound and if added to the premium dog and cat food, can harm them. These are the symptoms that could evolve as a result of consuming Avocado leaves; gastrointestinal irritation, diarrhea, respiratory distress, fluid accumulation around the tissue of the heart, congestion and even death.
